Post/Delete

This project is interesting because of the way that the museum gives two teenagers a voice and the fact that the two girls had the final say in the theme, artworks and lay-out. To let them make an exhibition without experience but guiding them to a good result. As well as the importance of the community and unity targeted goal of the project.

Post / Delete is an exhibition of the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam that is part of the MySchiedam project. A platform for curious inhabitants of Schiedam who want to contribute to a sustainable city with their creativity and story. The museum wants to use this to realize the motto “by and for the community”. They want the museum to be of significance to as many Schiedam habitants as possible and to contribute to a viable community. Together with 20 other cultural organizations, they are part of the first group of OF / BY / FOR ALL, an international movement founded by Nina Simon, director of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History.

Following on from MySchiedam, two secondary school students asked the museum whether they could make an exhibition based on the effects of Social Media. They want to work at the fact that you often show the perfect picture online, and thus they want to pay attention to the psychological consequences that social media can have for younger people. One of the two has also been a victim of this phenomena. The museum responded enthusiastically and invited them to get started. The girls were helped with the steps needed to make an exhibition; from selecting works, plotting storylines, devising interactive tools, organizing, and calculating costs.

The two girls indicated that there was a lot more to it than they expected, but they were grateful for the personal guidance. They learned more than they initially thought. The exhibition ran from March 16 to June 16, 2019
