Kinderbiënnale, Groniger Museum

This project is interesting because of the way they give children a voice in making an exhibition. To collaborate with the target-group; instead of imagining what they want, they will now tell you what they want. It is inspiring to see that the children get to be the curators for once.

In 2017, The National Gallery in Singapore launched the first Children’s Biennale. A biennial event dedicated to art and now made by children. Within this project, children are guided in organizing this event. From helping with the build-up, devising, and giving guided tours to choosing the artworks.

For this project, 30 child-ambassadors have been chosen to work in the museum for six months. They do small ‘Lightning internships’, where they participate in every department, from education, exhibitions to marketing. In addition, there is also a work visit to artists where they are given the opportunity to work with them in their studios.

“The Children’s Biennale is a presentation of contemporary interactive art. Each work of art challenges interaction, participation, and creation. By doing, discovering, creating, and wondering, visitors are activated in a varied way. This can be done, for example, by ‘building’ a continuously changing work, by contributing to a digital presentation or by physically moving around in an installation.”

Of the 12 works of art that will be shown in the exhibition, three are from Singapore, the other nine are made by Dutch artists.

The themes of the artworks are not yet known, so the view of the social purpose in terms of theme is still unclear.
